The insidious problem of file bloat

Bloated files have cascading consequences. More bloated files mean more primary storage. More storage means more rack space, floor space, cables, switch ports, switches, power, cooling, a lot of management and a huge amount of expense. Bloated files also mean bigger emails, slower mail servers, choked bandwidth, larger backup windows, longer recovery times and additional secondary storage for data protection, leading to even more rack space, storage systems, cables, switch ports, switches, rack space, floor space, power, cooling, a lot more management and a whole lot more expense.

Deduplication doesn't work well on primary storage – it can slow down system performance and lead to a much higher probability of undetected data corruption. Normal data compression also slows down the system, and often has little effect on Microsoft Office or JPEG files. And these technologies don't reduce file bloat – they merely treat the symptoms.
