We have struggled for years to find a pricing model that works for our storage optimization software. For every customer who bought NXPowerLite for File Servers, there were ten or more who passed it over. However, having received feedback like this from just about every customer, we were pretty certain we didn’t have a product problem:
So we dug into what wasn’t working for customers and discovered that many potential customers were struggling with our pricing. We had been using a per-server model, however, it was very difficult to come up with suitable pricing based on the number of servers - a customer with a single 1TB Windows server isn’t getting the same value from the technology as another customer with a 25TB SAN that just happens to have a single Windows server in front of it. Clearly, counting servers wasn’t the way to go.
We’re extremely proud of NXPowerLite, and we want to make it work for as many customers as possible, so we spent some time investigating our options. After long and hard consideration, we realized that there was a way to make the pricing directly proportional to the value the software delivers. We’ve spent much of this year reworking the internals of NXPowerLite for File Servers to bring you a true usage-based pricing model, based on the volume of storage space reclaimed.
Now you can buy exactly the volume of storage you want to reclaim for considerably less than the equivalent lifetime cost of buying the storage hardware itself - everyone wins!
This is how it works:
- You buy a 'Storage Reclaim Credit' for the volume of storage you want to reclaim.
- As NXPowerLite optimizes files, the amount that it reduces each file by is deducted from the available credit - this is the 'usage'.
- Usage is tracked and reported centrally and the software will automatically stop working when your available credit is exhausted. For example, a 500 GB credit would allow you to reclaim 500 GB of space using NXPowerLite before having to purchase more.
We want customers to walk away feeling they get far more value from buying our software and dealing with us than they would ever normally expect. Nothing makes us happier than to hear that we provided ‘a refreshing change’.
So for us ideal pricing has to be:
The price is simple and transparent, so you can easily see what you are buying and how this relates to the value you receive. The clearer pricing is, the easier it is to make an informed decision.
There is no ambiguity - credit is tracked centrally so you will always be able to see clearly how much of the value you have realized from your purchase.
Pricing that tracks closely with value rather than being determined by product features or tangential measures is by its very nature fairer. Also, the credits you buy will never expire so you always get exactly the value you’ve paid for.
